    Why Baking Soda Is the Wrong Answer for Urine on Wool

    The short answer: almost every guide on how to get dog urine out of a wool rug tells you to sprinkle baking soda on it for the smell. Professional rug cleaners say the opposite, and they are right. Baking soda is alkaline, wool is a protein fiber that alkali attacks, and on a wool rug it can shift the pH enough to make dyes run while being genuinely difficult to vacuum back out of the pile. What actually works is a lot of blotting under your body weight, then a mild acid to neutralise the alkalinity that urine develops as it ages, then fast drying with air to both faces. And the timing matters more than the product, because fresh urine and week-old urine are two different chemical problems that need opposite treatment.

    The short answer: the internet cannot agree on how to clean a wool rug, and that is because the question is wrong. Water is not the enemy. Wool is a protein fiber that survives water perfectly well, which is why sheep stand about in the rain. What destroys it is three other things: alkaline soap, which chemically attacks the protein, heat combined with agitation, which locks the fiber scales together into felt and cannot be undone, and slow drying, which invites mildew. So a wool rug can be washed, provided the cleaner is pH neutral, the water is cool, the scrubbing is gentle and the drying is fast. But before any of that, check three things about your particular rug, because some wool rugs genuinely cannot be washed at home and it has nothing to do with the wool.

    The short answer: almost every guide on how to get dog pee out of jute rug tells you to spray a vinegar and water solution on it. Do that and you will have two problems instead of one, because soaking jute dissolves the plant tannins inside the fiber and deposits them in a brown ring as it dries. The urine stain is still there, and now there is a water stain around it. What actually works is blotting hard in the first minutes, drying fast, cleaning the floor underneath, and then treating the rug dry. And there is one thing worth knowing before you buy anything: enzyme cleaners, the standard recommendation everywhere, cannot work on jute for a structural reason, not a strength reason.

Jute is a plant fiber that swells, browns and grows mildew when it absorbs water, so the amount of moisture you can use is measured in dabs, not sprays. For anything beyond a fresh spill, the answer is not less water but no water: a dry extraction powder brushed through the pile lifts dirt with controlled moisture that never reaches the backing. And for pet urine, the honest answer nobody gives is that the standard fix cannot work on jute at all, for a reason worth understanding before you make it worse.
