The short answer: four different products get searched with this question and they need four different answers. A protector is thin with a waterproof membrane and washes easily on cold and gentle. An encasement zips round all six sides and washes the same way. A pad is quilted with fill inside and needs a large drum and careful drying. A topper is several inches of foam and, in most cases, cannot go in a washing machine at all, whatever the internet says. Whichever you have, the rule that matters is heat: the waterproof layer is polyurethane or TPU, and high dryer heat cracks it, which is why a protector that worked for a year suddenly stops being waterproof.

Work out which of the four you own

Nearly every guide on this subject answers for one item and uses the four names interchangeably in the process. They are different products with different constructions, and the difference between them decides whether your washing machine can handle the job at all.

Protector: thin, fitted, and the easy one

A protector is a thin fitted sheet with a waterproof backing laminated to it. It adds no comfort and no thickness, and its only job is stopping liquid reaching the mattress. Fitted skirt, elasticated corners, and it feels like a sheet with a slightly plastic underside.

This washes easily and is the item most of the advice online is actually about. Cold or warm water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, and low heat or air drying.

Encasement: the same, sealed on all six sides

An encasement zips completely around the mattress rather than fitting over the top like a sheet. That matters practically, because a spill running down the side cannot reach the mattress and because it is the only version that does anything about bed bugs.

It washes exactly like a protector. The only additional care is the zip itself: fasten it before washing so the teeth do not catch on the fabric, and check the velcro flap at the end of the zip is closed.

Pad: quilted, with fill inside

A mattress pad adds a layer of cushioning, so it has fibre fill quilted between two fabric layers. Some have a waterproof backing as well and some do not, which is worth checking because it changes the drying rules.

The fill is what complicates it. A pad is bulky when wet and needs room to move in the drum, so a small machine will not clean it properly and a packed drum stops the water circulating. It also clumps as it dries, exactly as a duvet does, which means drying it flat or with dryer balls rather than leaving it in a heap.

Topper: several inches of foam, and usually not machine washable

This is the one the internet gets wrong. A topper is a genuine layer of memory foam, latex or thick fibre, typically two to four inches deep, and it is a piece of bedding you sleep on rather than a cover.

Solid foam should not go in a washing machine. It absorbs an enormous amount of water, becomes heavy enough to unbalance the drum, and the agitation tears the cell structure so the topper never regains its shape. Many toppers have a removable zip-off cover, and that cover is the washable part. The foam itself is a spot-clean and air-dry item.

Fibre-filled toppers are the exception and behave like a very large pad, so the drum capacity question applies twice over.

Numbers worth knowing

Whichever you own, the same rule governs the dryer. The waterproof membrane on these products is polyurethane or TPU, and high heat cracks it, causing it to peel and lose its waterproofing. That is the actual reason a protector that worked perfectly for a year suddenly lets liquid through, and people conclude they bought a faulty one. Low heat or air drying, and take it out promptly rather than leaving it tumbling.

Also worth knowing before you spend money: published lifespans disagree by a factor of three. One source states protectors should be replaced every one to two years; another says washing correctly extends life to three to five. The difference is mostly how they have been dried, which puts the heat rule squarely in your own interest rather than being a manufacturer’s caution.

Frequency, since it comes up constantly: every one to two months for a protector or encasement in normal use, and sooner after any spill or illness. Between washes, vacuum the surface when you change the sheets, which removes dust without putting the item through a cycle.

The two topper rows are where most of the bad advice lives. A foam topper in a washing machine is the same mistake as a foam cushion in a washing machine: it takes on an enormous amount of water, becomes heavy enough to throw the drum out of balance, and the agitation tears the open cell structure so it comes out lumpy and stays that way.

Check yours for a zip. A great many toppers are foam inside a removable cover, and once you know that, the whole job becomes washing one manageable item rather than wrestling something the size of a mattress.

The drum capacity question

A pad or fibre topper needs room to move for water to circulate through the fill, so a drum packed tight will not clean it however long the cycle runs. The practical test is the same as for a duvet: put the dry item in the drum and check you can still fit a hand comfortably down the side. If you cannot, it is too big for that machine, and a launderette with a commercial drum will do a better job than three attempts at home.

Heated mattress pads have their own rules

Worth a section of its own because there is wiring inside, and none of the general advice about protectors accounts for that. The good news is that most modern heated pads are machine washable. The rules are non-negotiable rather than cautious.

Before it goes anywhere near water

Detach the controller and the power cord completely. They unplug at a connector on the pad, and that connector must be dry. Nothing electronic goes in the machine.

Inspect the wiring first. Run your hands across the whole pad feeling for the internal wires, and look for kinks, hard spots, scorch marks or fraying at the connector. A damaged heating element is a fire risk, and washing does not fix it. If you find damage, the pad is finished rather than dirty.

Check the label for a specific cycle. Manufacturers often specify a short wash of a few minutes rather than a full cycle, because the point is cleaning the fabric without stressing the wires.

Washing and drying

Cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, no bleach and no fabric softener. Pre-soak for ten to fifteen minutes if it needs it rather than extending the wash.

Never wring or twist it. That is the instruction most likely to be ignored and the one most likely to break a heating wire, because a wire that survives a wash does not survive being folded sharply under pressure.

For drying, a brief tumble on low for around ten minutes to remove the bulk of the water, then air dry the rest of the way flat or over a line. Do not leave it running in a dryer, and do not use high heat at any point.

Two absolutes

Never dry clean it. The solvents damage the wire insulation, and this is the one instruction that appears on every manufacturer’s label and almost never in an article.

Never plug it in until it is completely dry. Not slightly damp, not nearly dry. Give it longer than you think and check the connector specifically, since that is where moisture hides and where the electricity arrives.

Numbers worth knowing

Store a heated pad rolled rather than folded. Sharp folds put pressure on the internal wires at exactly the same points every time, and that is how they fail. Rolling distributes it. The same logic applies to how you make the bed: a pad tucked hard around a mattress corner is being creased in one place every night.

And wash it less often than an ordinary pad, once or twice a season rather than monthly. Every cycle is mechanical stress on the wiring, so the trade between hygiene and lifespan runs the other way here than it does with a plain protector.

What actually destroys the waterproof layer

People generally conclude a protector was faulty when it stops repelling liquid. Usually it was cooked, clogged or bleached, and all three are avoidable.

Heat, which is the main one

The waterproof membrane is polyurethane or TPU laminated to the fabric. High dryer heat causes it to crack and peel, and once it has crazed it does not seal again. That is the mechanism behind a protector that worked for a year and then let a glass of water straight through.

Low heat or air drying, and take it out promptly rather than leaving it sitting in a warm drum after the cycle ends. Worth noting that the sources disagree here: most say low heat only, while one mattress brand states low to medium for its own product. If you are not certain which yours is, low is the answer that cannot go wrong.

Fabric softener, which clogs it

Softener works by depositing a waxy film on fibres, and on a breathable waterproof laminate that film blocks the pores that let moisture vapour out. The result is a protector that feels clammy to sleep on and traps heat, which is precisely the complaint people have about them.

Skip it entirely. If you want the softening effect on the fabric side, wool dryer balls do it mechanically without leaving anything behind, and they speed up drying at low heat, which helps twice over.

Bleach, which degrades the backing

Chlorine bleach breaks down the waterproof backing, weakens the elastic on a fitted skirt, and damages the fabric fibres. For stains, an enzymatic cleaner or diluted hydrogen peroxide on a pale item does the job without the damage.

And one correction worth making

Several guides, including a very well known sleep authority, recommend bicarbonate of soda and vinegar together for removing stains and odours. Those two neutralise each other on contact, producing water and sodium acetate, which means both active ingredients are gone before they reach the fabric.

Use one or the other. Vinegar in a wash cycle helps with residue and mineral deposits; bicarbonate of soda works dry, sprinkled on and vacuumed off, for odour. Never in the same load, and never expect a fizzing mixture to do more than salty water would.

One more, from a mattress brand’s own guidance

Two sources suggest adding essential oils to dryer balls when drying a waterproof protector. On a laminated membrane that is oil in direct contact with the layer you are trying to protect, and on any absorbent fabric it leaves a residue that attracts dust. If you want it to smell fresh, dry it properly and store it clean. Fragrance on bedding is generally solving a problem that thorough drying already solved.

Why has mine stopped being waterproof?

Almost always heat damage rather than a faulty product. Look at the underside in good light: crazing, cracking or flaking of the backing means the laminate has failed, and once it has, no wash or treatment restores it.
