Every tablecloth size chart starts with the table: measure it, add the drop twice, done. The formula is right. However, the part nobody mentions is how long the drop should be, and that is set by your chairs. A standard dining table is 29 to 30 inches high. A dining chair seat is 18 to 19 inches, so there are 9 to 12 inches between the tabletop and the seat. Hang more cloth than that over the side, and it ends up in everyone’s lap.
Short answer: Tablecloth size = table length plus twice the drop, by table width plus twice the drop. For a dinner table, aim for a drop of 8 to 10 inches. So a 6 ft table that is 72 by 36 inches takes a 52 x 96 inch cloth. The popular 60 x 102 hangs 12 inches on the sides and 15 at the ends, which is seat level and lap level. For a round table, add 16 to 22 inches to the diameter: a 64 or 70 inch cloth for a 48 inch table. For floor length on a 30 inch high table, add 60 inches. That gives 90 x 132 for a 6 ft folding table and 90 x 156 for an 8 ft one.

How to Measure for a Tablecloth
You need two numbers from the table and one decision. First, measure the tabletop length and width, or the diameter of a round table. Measure with the leaves in if you’ll use them. The Company Store reminds you to include “any leaves or extenders you plan to use”. It’s the measurement people forget most.
Then pick the drop, the length of cloth that hangs over each edge. The formula is the same in every source, from Omni Calculator to Living Spaces:
Round: diameter + 2 × drop
Square: side + 2 × drop
Floor length: the drop is the table height, usually 30 inches
A 72 x 36 inch table with a 9 inch drop needs 90 x 54 inches. But nobody sells 90 x 54. So the real question is which standard size gets closest, and how far off each side ends up. That is what the chart and the calculator below are for.

How Long Should a Tablecloth Hang? Check the Chairs
Every source agrees that a longer drop looks more formal. Yet they don’t agree on numbers:
| Source | Everyday | Dressier | Floor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living Spaces | 6 to 10 in (recommends 9) | “go longer” | Double the table height |
| Omni Calculator | 6 to 8 in | 14 to 16 in (half drop) | Usually 30 in |
| CV Linens | 6 to 12 in | 10 to 15 in | Up to 30 in |
| Direct Textile Store | At least 8 in | Table height, 30 in |
Still, none of them mentions the chairs. According to IKEA’s dining height guide, a dining table is 29 to 30 inches high and a seat 18 to 19 inches. It also says “the ideal clearance between the tabletop and the chair seat is 24–30 cm (9–12 inches).” That gap is your limit. So a drop shorter than it hangs in front of the knees. A longer one, on the other hand, rests on the lap of whoever sits down (my math).
So the 14 to 16 inch half drop works for a buffet or a display table nobody sits at. Floor length works at events, where the cloth is meant to be sat into. For a dinner table, though, I’d keep the drop at 8 to 10 inches on the sides where people sit. The ends, by contrast, matter less if nobody sits there.
Tablecloth Size Chart for Rectangle, Round and Square Tables
I ran the common table sizes against the standard cloth sizes sold in the US. For each table, the chart gives the cloth that gets every side closest to a 9 inch drop. The numbers in brackets are the drops you actually get: sides first, then ends. Floor length assumes a 30 inch high table. “No standard size” means no common cloth gets within 3 inches of the floor.
Rectangle and oval tables
| Table (inches) | Everyday cloth (drop sides / ends) | Floor length |
|---|---|---|
| 48 x 30 (4 ft) | 52 x 70 (11 in / 11 in) | No standard size |
| 60 x 36 (5 ft) | 52 x 72 (8 in / 6 in) | No standard size |
| 72 x 30 (6 ft folding) | 52 x 96 (11 in / 12 in) | 90 x 132 (30 in / 30 in) |
| 72 x 36 (6 ft dining) | 52 x 96 (8 in / 12 in) | 90 x 132 (27 in / 30 in) |
| 72 x 40 | 52 x 96 (6 in / 12 in) | No standard size |
| 84 x 40 (7 ft) | 60 x 102 (10 in / 9 in) | No standard size |
| 96 x 30 (8 ft folding) | 52 x 114 (11 in / 9 in) | 90 x 156 (30 in / 30 in) |
| 96 x 42 (8 ft dining) | 60 x 120 (9 in / 12 in) | No standard size |
Round tables
| Table | Everyday cloth (drop) | Floor length |
|---|---|---|
| 36 in round (seats 4) | 60 in (12 in) | 90 in (27 in) |

| 60 in round (seats 8 to 10) | 72 in (6 in) | 120 in (30 in) |
| 72 in round (seats 10 to 12) | 90 in (9 in) | 132 in (30 in) |
Square tables
| Table | Everyday cloth (drop) |
|---|---|
| 30 x 30 in | 52 x 52 (11 in) |
| 36 x 36 in | 54 x 54 (9 in) |
| 42 x 42 in | 60 x 60 (9 in) |
| 48 x 48 in | 62 x 62 (7 in) |
Seat counts for round tables are from Emory University’s event linen guide. The rest is my math from the formula above, with the standard sizes from Direct Textile Store, CV Linens and The Company Store. Oval tables, too, take the oblong sizes; measure the longest length and the widest width.

Source check: does 60 x 120 reach the floor?
What one chart says: Emory University’s linen guide lists a 6 ft banquet table with a 60 x 120 inch cloth, marked “hangs to floor”.
What the math says: a 6 ft banquet table is 72 x 30 inches and 30 inches high, per Direct Textile Store. A 60 inch wide cloth on a 30 inch wide table hangs 15 inches on each side, half way down. The ends hang 24 inches. Neither reaches the floor. CV Linens and Direct Textile Store both give 90 x 132 for a full drop on that table. Check it: 90 minus 30 is exactly 60, or two drops of 30 inches.
What I’d do: for floor length, check that the cloth’s width is the table width plus 60 inches. If it isn’t, it won’t reach the floor on the long sides, whatever the label says.

Before You Buy: Shrinkage, Leaves and Folding Tables
Linen shrinks more than the chart allows for
Linoto, a linen maker, puts it at “3% to 10%, with the most significant reduction in size occurring during the first wash”. Prewashed linen shrinks only 1 to 2%. On a 102 inch cloth, 10% is about 10 inches off the length, or 5 inches off each end (my math). As a result, a 15 inch end drop turns into 10. Polyester, in contrast, barely changes. So with unwashed cotton or linen, buy one step up, or wash it before you judge the fit. My guide to washing a tablecloth covers the water temperature.
Measure with the leaves in
A leaf adds length only. Say you buy for the table with the leaf in, then use it without. The ends hang longer, but the sides don’t change, so it still clears laps along the long sides. That is the safer direction to get wrong.
Folding tables are narrower
A 6 ft folding table is 30 inches wide, while many 6 ft dining tables are wider. Therefore, check yours. The same 60 x 102 cloth hangs 15 inches off a 30 inch wide folding table and 12 inches off a 36 inch wide one. A chart that just says “6 ft table” can’t tell you which one it means.

Tablecloths and Runners Worth Buying
One pick for each of the most common tables. These are search links, so you can compare colors and fabrics in the exact size.
6 ft dining table, 72 x 36
52 x 96 inch tablecloth
On a 72 x 36 table it hangs 8 inches on the sides and 12 at the ends. So the people along the sides keep their laps free. It is less common than 60 x 102. Still, it is the one that fits a home dining table.
Worth it if: your table is about 72 x 36 to 40 inches and people sit along the long sides.
Skip it if: your table is narrower than 34 inches. Then the sides hang over 9 inches; check with the calculator.
48 inch round table
70 inch round tablecloth
An 11 inch drop all round on a 48 inch table, just above seat level. If you want more room, a 64 inch cloth hangs 8. For a 42 inch table it hangs 14 inches, so go to 60 inches there.
Worth it if: you have a 48 inch round table that seats about six.
Skip it if: your round table is 54 inches or more. A 72 inch cloth fits a 54 inch table better.
Holiday buffet on a folding table
90 x 132 inch tablecloth
The full floor-length size for a 6 ft folding table. It hangs exactly 30 inches on every side, so the legs and the boxes under it disappear. Good for a Thanksgiving buffet or a dessert table.
Worth it if: you set up a 6 ft folding table for buffets or extra guests.
Skip it if: you will sit at it. Floor length drapes over laps the whole meal.
Runner for a 6 ft table
Table runner, 12 to 14 x 90 inches
Living Spaces suggests a runner a third of the table width, so 12 inches on a 36 inch table. At 90 inches long it hangs 9 inches off each end of a 72 inch table. A 108 inch runner hangs 18, which is fine if nobody sits at the ends.
Worth it if: you want color without covering the wood. It also works over a plain cloth.
Skip it if: your table is under 60 inches long. Then look for a 72 inch runner instead.

When Not to Use a Standard Tablecloth Size
- Your table is wider than about 42 inches: most everyday cloths are 52 or 60 inches wide. That leaves a drop of 9 inches or less, so look at 70 inch wide sizes.
- The table is a beautiful wood one you use every day: a runner and placemats protect it and still show it. For more on a warm, minimal dining table, see my Japandi dining room guide.
- A small table in a tight corner: any drop catches knees and chair legs. I’d skip the cloth and use placemats; more ideas for tight spots are in my small dining area guide.
- It is really a coffee table: a tablecloth on a coffee table looks like a mistake. A tray and one centerpiece do more; see my Christmas coffee table ideas.
Questions People Ask
What size table does a 60 x 102 tablecloth fit?
A 6 ft table. On a 72 x 30 inch folding table it hangs 15 inches all round. On a 72 x 36 inch dining table, it hangs 12 inches on the sides and 15 at the ends. Both are past the lap line, so it suits a buffet better than a dinner table.
What size is a 90 x 156 tablecloth for?
An 8 ft folding table, 96 x 30 inches, at floor length. It hangs 30 inches on every side, which on a 30 inch high table is exactly the floor. In feet it is 7.5 by 13.
Should a tablecloth be the same size on all sides?
Ideally the sides where people sit get the same drop. The ends can be longer. In practice, standard rectangle sizes rarely give equal drops, because tables come in more proportions than cloths do. Put the even drop on the sides where people sit.
Do I need a table pad under the tablecloth?
No, at least not for sizing. A pad sits on the top only, so it doesn’t change the size you buy. Measure the table without it.

The Bottom Line
Tablecloth size is table plus twice the drop, and the drop is the part to think about. Under about 10 inches, it clears the laps of people at a standard table. Over 12, it sits in them. That makes 52 x 96 the dinner size for a 72 x 36 table, and 64 or 70 inches round for a 48 inch table. For a buffet on folding tables, go floor length: 90 x 132 or 90 x 156. Finally, buy unwashed linen one step up.
